A Letter from Crystal | A Survivor's Story
“My story is not unique. Tragically, there are countless stories like mine. But I stand before you as a survivor because of organizations like Hope’s Wings.”
My Story
I don’t believe domestic abuse just appears overnight. It often begins quietly, sometimes with the very people who are meant to protect us. It begins with words that wound, with control that suffocates, with silence that isolates.
I’m from Carter County, Kentucky, a place of winding roads, deep hollers, and small, tight-knit communities. A place where everyone knows your name, but no one may truly know your pain.
I am the oldest of six children. The abuse in my life started when I was very young, around five or six. The people who were supposed to love and protect me were the ones who hurt me. The abuse I met at their hands was the same abuse they had suffered at the hands of their parents. It was a cycle of pain repeating itself, and I was trapped in the middle.
I experienced verbal abuse, being told I was worthless, that I shouldn’t have been born. I experienced physical abuse, being hit, shoved, and punished in ways that left both my body and my spirit bruised. I experienced sexual abuse at the hands of people I should have been able to trust.
Even as a child, I learned to hide my pain. To survive in silence. In those deep hollers and along those winding roads, I learned what it meant to feel invisible. But that was only the beginning.
Adolescence and Patterns of Abuse
As I grew older, the abuse didn’t stop. It only intensified. By my teenage years, I had learned to endure anything to survive. I bounced from one abusive relationship to the next.
I was never the one to leave, and when they left, it was always my fault. I was never enough. I would take beatings, endure humiliation, give everything I had just to keep someone from walking away.
By sixteen, I had been beaten down in every imaginable way, physically, verbally, emotionally, and sexually. I stopped crying. I stopped saying “no.” I curled up in silence, repeating the lies I had been told until I believed them.
The Turning Point
"Hope’s Wings didn’t just give me a roof over my head. They gave me the space, the support, and the guidance I needed to reclaim my life."
It wasn’t until I was thirty-two that I began to see a way out. I discovered the New Opportunity School for Women, a place that reminded me of my own strength. The director there saw something in me I could no longer see in myself. She saw my worth. She saw my struggle. And she became my advocate.
She reached out to Hope’s Wings on my behalf, coming to my rescue when I needed it most. Through Hope’s Wings’ transitional housing program, I finally had a safe place. A place to heal. A place to start over. A place where I could find independence, dignity, safety, and hope.
Even though I only received the transitional housing, it changed everything. Hope’s Wings didn’t just give me a roof over my head. They gave me the space, the support, and the guidance I needed to reclaim my life.
Breaking Generational Trauma
Hope’s Wings is doing much more than helping women survive. They are breaking generational chains of trauma.
They show up every day with passion, with drive, with a commitment to remind women that they are worthy, capable, and strong. They give women the tools, the community, and the belief they need to rise above the abuse they have endured and to stop the cycle for the next generation.
The Resilience of Women
Women are the backbone of our families. We are caregivers, nurturers, fighters, and warriors. Yet too often, that strength is broken from a young age. We are silenced, beaten into submission and told we are worthless.
It is like breaking a wild horse. The spirit, the fight, the freedom ripped away. And yet that strength never truly disappears. Hope’s Wings reminds women of it. They help survivors reclaim their lives, their confidence, their power.
I am living proof.
Giving Back
Today, I get to pay it forward. I serve as the Program Coordinator at the New Opportunity School for Women, and I am a Peer Mentor for women seeking and receiving services at Hope’s Wings.
It is an amazing partnership where we lift women up together. We fight for them, we stand beside them, we celebrate their victories, and we guide them out of the darkness toward the incredible power locked within them.
But Hope’s Wings cannot do this work alone. Every day in Kentucky, women arrive desperate for help. Many are turned away because resources are stretched too thin. Your support gives women safety, dignity, and a chance to start over.
New Chapters
"I am not a victim. I am a survivor."
I still feel the echoes of my journey every day, but I refuse to be defined by it.
I am not a victim. I am a survivor. And women like me, we are warriors.
Hope’s Wings gave me more than hope. They gave me a second chance at life. Through their transitional housing program, I found safety, stability, and a path forward. They reminded me I am worthy. They reminded me my life matters. They reminded me I am not alone.
I ask you: Will you help Hope’s Wings continue to give that same hope, safety, and empowerment to the next woman who walks through their doors?
